Our member Madoqua Ventures Spearheads Green Hydrogen Project in Portugal

Novembro, 2024

PORTUGAL, THE NETHERLANDS and GERMANY Join forces for a GREEN hydrogen CORRIDOR

Our member Madoqua is at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative, coordinating a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between The Port of Sines, Duisport, the Port of Rotterdam and Madoqua.

This ambitious project will create a reliable supply chain for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives from Portugal to The Netherlands and Germany, supporting Europe's net-zero goals. The collaboration will also advance technologies in carbon capture and hydrogen production, marking a significant step in the region’s energy transition.

BACKGROUND

In a significant move towards sustainable energy production, Madoqua Ventures, through its subsidiary Madoqua Renewables, is leading the development of a groundbreaking green hydrogen and renewable ammonia project in Portugal. The initiative, known as MadoquaPower2X, is set to become a world-leading venture in the green energy sector.

The project, located in the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS), will utilize 500 MW of electrolysis capacity powered by renewable energy sources. Once operational, it aims to produce an impressive 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. This ambitious undertaking is expected to play a crucial role in Portugal's National Hydrogen Strategy and contribute significantly to the country's decarbonization efforts.

MadoquaPower2X is a consortium comprising Madoqua Renewables, Power2X, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The partners are committed to developing and operating the project in accordance with the highest environmental and safety standards. By replacing fossil fuel-based hydrogen, the initiative aims to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 600,000 tonnes, equivalent to taking 130,000 passenger vehicles off the road.

This project not only represents a major step towards sustainable energy production but also promises to generate economic growth in the region. As the first industrial-scale installation in Sines' future energy and technology hub, MadoquaPower2X is poised to become a cornerstone of Portugal's green energy infrastructure.
